Migraine Headache Symptoms: Understanding and Treating

Expert AuthorMigraine headache symptoms are a part of life for nearly 11 out of 100 people. If you are one of them, or if you live with a sufferer, you know that migraine headache symptoms include much more than the actual headache pain. Migraine headache symptoms affect your entire body in one way or another. In addition to the immediate symptoms, you may experience others that linger for hours or even days after the actual headache subsides.

It is important that you understand what migraine headaches symptoms you may experience. You have various options for treating symptoms, and understanding will lead to proper, effective treatment.

Awful, Throbbing Pain!

Migraine sufferers usually agree on at least one thing – the awful, throbbing pain. That throbbing pain most commonly begins on one side of your head, near the temple. The pain may intensify if you attempt some physical activity, which is the reason most migraine headache sufferers find that lying absolutely still brings a measure of relief.

Other Migraine Headache Symptoms

You may experience these other migraine headache symptoms over the following hours and days:

* your pain spreads from one to both sides of the head
* you become nauseous and vomit
* you have diarrhea and increased need to urinate
* you become dizzy
* your hands and feet become cold
* you find light and sound excruciatingly annoying
* your neck becomes stiff
* you have visual hallucinations such as flashing lights or zigzag lines
* you are more sensitive to cold than usual
* you experience unexplained mood swings
* you become irritable, confused, and tired

Auras

One migraine headache symptom, the “aura”, warns some people that a migraine is beginning. Auras have been described as visual disturbance such as flashes of bright lights or blind spots. Usually occurring at the onset of the headache, auras may diminish once the throbbing pain begins. Auras can be present in one or both eyes. In some cases, they continue beyond the headache itself.

Migraine headaches symptoms can be from 4 to 72 hours in duration.

CAUTION: If you experience frequent pain in one specific part of your head, you should check with your doctor to rule out other serious causes.

    Hi guys,

    If you are suffering from brutal headache over a period of time then you should take Imitrex tablet. This medicine is used to treat migraine headache stroke once they occur. This medication is not to be used for other types of headaches. One dose is taken by mouth at the first signs of a migraine attack.

    Imitrex can be very helpful, although I know several people, myself included that it does not work for at all.
    I have found that by going to the chiroprator and making sure my neck is in line, I am able to get rid of the majority of the symptoms. It may still take a little while to get rid of the after effects, but the headache itself usually fades pretty quickly.

    I have suffered with migraine for several years. It started with birth control pills, in my early twentys and now, in my early fortys I have them almost daily. Imitrex does not work for me. I am getting a little scared that it may be something worse. I have had MRI’s of the brain and they showed nothing to cause them. I am soooooo tired of this headache. Christmas Day was spent in the dark in the bed, in between throwing up. I have the full blown aura, vision loss for about 30 minutes then comes the major pain. Camera flashes, bright lights, sunlight have started to trigger the migraines.

    i am a long time migraine sufferer. mine occur at least once a month, usually 2-3 times per month. it starts with a twitch in my right eyelid and within hours, my head is throbbing, im nauseous and/or throwing up, sensitive to all light, sound and smell. i have found that an anti-anxiety drug, klonopin, helps with my migraines. i have had several different prescriptions for the pain, but klonopin always knocks them out.

    My cousin has a migraine and I see him how he gets a hard time on it. When his migraine attacks we can’t talk to him and he only stays on his room. I feel sad for my cousin and I am very thankful that I don’t have it.

    I suffer with migraines and it is no fun… I take a preventive medication and an abortive medication. I have allergies and Chronic sinusitis which aggrivates my situation. Relpax works well in relieving migraines but does not always work 100 percent for me. It is the best medication I have used so far…there is a new treatment using electrical impulses via implantation. I urge those who are suffering and have not sought medical treatment to do so… see a neurologist or headache specialist. Keep a headache diary or mark down on a monthly caleder each time you have a migraine… it will help the doctor in perscribing the best regimine for you.
